In my limited experience of songwriting, I've definitely experienced the feeling of writing a song that just seems to flow and almost writes itself. I've also experienced the block of worrying too much about following "standard" structures and so believe the article to be true.
Would it be correct to say then that you don't have to be able to play scales on your instrument to write a melody? I think this is another way that teachers may unwittingly block their students as far as songwriting is concerned but not necessarily as far as progressing technically on the instrument is.
Maybe the two need to really be disassociated.....?
