Using an Existing Song To Create Your Own

I find that if listening to a song I can create alternate melodies and lyrics.

Then I get the lyrics down on paper and when I come back to them at another time I can't remember exactly how the tune was going in my head.

I now have a set of lines or a hook that I then create my own music to and build the rest of the song up and in the end I have an original song.
